Roles that keep the presses moving
Our work spans carving, inking, printing and the small tasks that keep a studio ready for the next group. We look for people who are calm with tools, neat with paper handling and comfortable guiding adults, students and younger makers through lino and soft-cut block printing.
Depending on the season, we may need workshop facilitators, studio support staff, print technicians, schools programme helpers and people who can manage group bookings. Some roles are front facing, others happen behind the table with brayers, inks, drying racks and registration marks. A steady hand is what we look for.
- Workshop delivery for private sessions and group classes
- School and venue support for pop-up printmaking days
- Studio preparation, cleaning and materials sorting
- Press, drying and edition handling for finished prints
What the studio asks of new people
We work with sharp tools, wet ink and paper that can mark easily, so attention to detail is part of the job. People who fit in well here usually respect safe carving habits, keep surfaces tidy and know how to explain a process without rushing the group through it.
Experience with printmaking helps, though related art, teaching or workshop experience can matter too. We value practical skill, clear communication and a calm manner when a class has mixed levels, from first-time carvers to students who want to test finer line work with V-tools and repeat prints.
- Confidence using gouges, knives and cutting mats with care
- Comfort explaining registration, editioning and ink control
- Willingness to set up and pack down mobile workshop gear
- Good timekeeping around studio sessions and school bookings
A day in a print workshop team
A normal day can move from checking paper sizes and cutting blocks to mixing inks, printing test sheets and laying out clean drying space. On school visits or pop-up classes, the pace shifts with the venue, but the same care applies to tools, tables and finished editions.
Some tasks suit people who like detail work, while others suit a steady facilitator who can keep a room moving. We also need practical support for press printing demos, beginner kits, family sessions and teacher workshops, where the setup must be organised and easy for learners to follow.
- Preparing lino, soft-cut blocks and carving stations
- Mixing water-based or oil-based block inks as needed
- Helping with baren printing and press printing
- Labeling editions and keeping papers in order
Where your work may take you
Our base is in Woodstock, Cape Town, and our workshops also travel to schools, studios and venues in other parts of South Africa. That can include Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Bellville and Somerset West, depending on the programme.
Some people stay close to the studio, while others are more involved in setup work at outside venues. If you are comfortable with light travel, packed equipment and changing rooms, that helps. The work suits people who can adapt without losing the rhythm of a print session.
Send a CV through our contact page
If you teach printmaking and would like to tutor with us, send a CV and a few photos of your prints via the contact page. Tell us which type of role fits your experience, whether you have worked in workshops, schools, print studios or event settings, and mention any printmaking methods you know well.
We read every application with the role in mind, especially for people who can support classes, manage materials or help with edition finishing. If you have a portfolio of print work, teacher experience or event setup experience, include that too. Keep it practical and clear, the way a good print brief should be.
- CV in PDF or similar format
- Short summary of your skills and availability
- Any print, teaching or workshop experience
